I have spied this phenomenon before but previously only in India or at a festival in Europe or North America. But the further we have traveled the more and more we have seen this fashion statement, this traveling uniform, this sisterhood of the traveling pants.
Now these are not trousers the average person would wear on a Friday night to the pub or a midweek shop down to the local supermarket or even to work. So what is it that brings these what I would say awful baggy pants into the fashion world and why are they a symbol and essential piece of kit for the female traveler?
Does anyone know where they are made? Has anyone ever stumbled across some distant tribe or culture in which these trousers are part of? The closest fashion genre I can find where these trousers are relevant is the Pantomime show, associated with Aladdin or Ali Baba and magic carpets. But that is all fantasy!
Maybe that’s what the fashionista’s who wear these are looking for? Fantasy.
If you ask me they are just simply awful, they make you stick out like a sore thumb, even more so than your white face in an Asian world makes you! I hope these travelers look back at their pictures in years to come commenting “what was I thinking?” and hang their heads in shame!!
Of late I have seen more serious developments in this fashion genre, its not only a sisterhood, there is an emerging Brotherhood….
